How To Fit
Your Child's
Bike Helmet

Cycling in family with your kids is great fun but it's important to protect them whilst riding. So, wearing a helmet is not only a must for little riders but it also needs to fit perfectly. Get the right fitting for a helmet with these simple steps.

Getting the perfect fit in 10 easy steps

All you'll need is a tape measure and if you don't have one, you can use a piece of string. Simply mark where it overlaps around their head and measure this against a ruler or metal tape measure.

Let's start with the steps:

  1. Wrap the tape measure (or string) around their head, above the eyebrows and ears.

  2. Use this measurement to select a helmet with the corresponding sizes - each of our helmets will tell you the size in the description.

  3. Pop on the helmet you’ve selected, it should cover most of their forehead - as this protects the frontal lobe of the brain.

  4. Hold your middle and forefinger together above the eyebrows; if the helmet touches your fingers, it’s a great fit!

  5. Adjust the bands within the helmet to ensure it’s stable on their head. The perfect fit means that the helmet won't move back and forth or side to side.

  6. Next, you'll need to adjust the strap. They should be firm, snug and all parts of the strap should be evenly tensioned.

  7. Adjust the straps around their ears so they sit comfortably below the ears.

  8. You shouldn’t be able to get more than one finger between the strap and their chin – if you can, tighten it up a little more.

  9. Now push the helmet back on their head, if it moves more than an inch tighten the strap in front of the ear. Push the helmet forward and if it moves more than an inch, tighten the strap at the back of the ear.

  10. Finally, get them to shake their head in all directions and if the helmet moves then you may need to tighten it up a little more.

Every few months, check your kids' helmet as the straps may loosen over time and you should always ensure they're wearing a helmet with the perfect fit. It's a great idea to wear helmets yourself, not only for your safety but to show a good example to the younger ones in the family - they may think they look silly but they sure look safe which is much more important. Take a look at our kids' helmets online and share with us how cool they can look like - safe riding!
